Opening Sequence Of Shutter Island

In class we looked at the opening sequence of Shutter Island to establish how the genre was portrayed, and how we have an idea of the narrative through just the opening sequence.

How does the opening sequence establish the narrative of the film? How are we introduced to the characters, and in what way? What does this tell us about them?

We know that the characters are in a mental prison and this we know because they are showing us the surroundings. Their behaviour and their movements help us to understand their personalities more. It also tells us about the narrative for example by the character of Leonardo Dicaprio. He immediately gets his gun out while his partner has difficulties by taking his out.
This suggests to us that he is probably not in fact a real detective, which later on in the film is a vital part of the narrative. The police men are higher status then everyone else. They are in charge for everyone through the gates of the secluded building, this could also tell us that we are in prison. The police also decides over the two detective as he ask them to hand in their guns. In fact, as wee see, the police men really are in charge of the two detectives for certain resons which we see soon in the film.

How do we know what genre of film this is? What visual, aural signifiers are there to indicate this?

The opening sequence tells us that the film is going to be within the genre of a thriller. This are causing different reasons:
• The tension building and suspense music 8a common genre of music used in thrillers to evoke fear and suspense, this is done through the use of Contrepuntal, non-diegetic music).
• The lighting is dark and we could say that it is also quite sepia toned to provide an eeriness to avoke the emotion of fear
• The violence and crime are common factors of a thriller genre, this is shown by the police men holding guns and the prisoners tied with chains around their ankles
• Use of the different camera shots helps us to solve the enigma.
