Opening Sequence Of The Shining

We establish from the opening sequence of the shining that the genre of the film is going to be a thriller/horror film, because of the use of

• editing.
The setting is in a secluded location, which means that the film is going to be a thriller

There is non-diegetic music, which tells us about thethriller genre, as the music begins as very slow, eerie, tension building music, which tells us that something is going to happen. The music changed slightly to high pitched sounds to increase dramatic tension which again creates a sense of what events may happen later on in the film, as the non-diegetic sound effects sound like screeching, screaming noises. They used birds eye view shots to show us the action that is happening below. It also reveals a lot of information about the location through a small amount of shots. The editing is very slow pace, which again like the use of music increases and builds in tension.
